Overview:

The BN Youth Intern Field Technician will be provided experience in field work and monitoring for the environmental section. The intern will have the opportunity to assist and participate in field monitoring and investigations on the impacts of activities on the environment within Biigtigong Nishnaabeg’s traditional territory including the fieldwork and site visits with the department and external partners. The BN Youth Intern must be a Biigtigong Nishnaabeg member between the ages of 18-29 years of age. The position will be located at the Sustainable Development office and will report to the Environmental Manager.

Summary of Duties/Requirements:

  • Participating in technical fieldwork, field site visits and assisting the lead field technicians in the collection of environmental data;
  • Fisheries and water sampling with the lead field monitoring consultants and technicians;
  • Learn about processing samples and how to record and input results;
  • Willingness to work in inclement weather;
  • Participate in required training and educational programs;
  • Experience in operating an ATV/UTV, understanding of boat safety and working safely in and around water;
  • Learn about regular maintenance and inventory of field equipment;
  • Any other duties as required to fulfill the mandate of the environmental section.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a registered member of Biigtigong Nishnaabeg;
  • Must be a youth between the ages of 18-29 years of age;
  • Must have current Standard First Aid and WHMIS;
  • Valid Pleasure Craft, SDV-BS, SVOP, UTV/ATV and chainsaw certification are an asset;
  • General fieldwork experience sample collection and monitoring programs are an asset;
  • Ability to work independently and in team environments;
  • Physically fit and capable of lifting 30lbs;
  • Knowledge of field safety protocols and ability to operate all required field equipment;
  • Flexible to work early hours, evenings or weekends, when required;
  • Valid Class G Drives License and access to a reliable vehicle
