Job Summary:
Under the supervision of the Director of the Children and Family Learning Centre, the Cook is
responsible for preparing and providing a complete and nutritious menu for all children, including
snacks and lunches, on a daily basis. Additionally, the Cook ensures that the Children and Family
Learning Centre maintains cleanliness and adheres to established standards at all times.

Skills & Qualifications:

Candidates will be screened according to the listed criteria. It is the responsibility of the
candidate to indicate that she/he meets the following criteria:

  • Secondary school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in food handling and cooking for large groups
  • Valid Ontario G Drivers License
  • Vulnerable Sector Check (upon hire)
  • Safe Food Handling Certificate (Current)
  • WHMIS
  • Current First Aid/CPR

Necessary Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of Canada’s Food Guide and any other related regulations that apply
  • Knowledge of the Early Years and Child Care Act
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the provisions that apply
  • Ability to maintain records of food usage/storage
  • Ability to deal with routine financial transactions

Working Conditions
  • Ability to work in an environment which may be at times noisy, hot, humid, steamy, etc.
  • Ability to work with chemical substances contained in cleaning supplies

Duties & Responsibilities:

The Cook shall:

  • Develop a two-week menu that promotes healthy eating
  • Prepare nutritious lunches and snacks every day
  • Clean the kitchen and set up the dining area daily, including lifting tables and chairs
  • Cook for evening programs if supper is provided, as well as during special occasions and events such as Father’s Day and Mother’s Day
  • Deliver presentations and workshops such as cookie exchanges, the four food groups, baby food preparation, home food canning, and healthy menu planning and budgeting
  • Shop regularly for the Children and Family Learning Centre
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary kitchen, pantry, and storage areas; clean items used for food preparation, dishes, and cutlery; sweep and wash floors; clean the stove, oven, microwave, freezer, and refrigerator
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary dining area; sweep and wash floors; clean tables and chairs
  • Standardize procedures and equipment for preparation to minimize waste in preparation and cleaning, reduce nutritive loss in cooking, and manage leftovers effectively
  • Reduce plate waste by identifying whether it is due to poorly prepared food, unpopular choices, or overly large servings
