PIC RIVER FIRST NATION RECEIVES FUNDING FOR LANDS AND RESOURCES

I am pleased to announce that Pic River First Nation has received $75,000 from the province on Ontario through the Northern Ontario Hertiage Fund Corporation to build capacity in the Lands and Resources Department with funding for the Lands and Resources Coordinator position.

This funding is a significant contribution to Pic River First Nation to ensure that all Chief & Council and community members are aware of all development activity taking place within our Traditional Territory. This funding provides our communtiy with the means to maintain ongoing relationships and partnerships with developers, contractors and government ministries & agencies all operating within our traditional territory.

Also, In December of 2008, there was another contribution to the Lands and Resources Department through the NOHFC's Youth Internship Program. $21,294 was contributed to hire an administrative assistant to the coordinator.

Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry said "I commend Pic River First Nation for proactively working towards long-term, sustainable economic development".

With this two year contribution, we now have the capability to focus on the important issues, mainly, strengthening our relationships with those companies out there who are actively working and developing in our territory. This infusion of funding allows staff to engage with these third parties, without having to direct a majority of our time on seeking funding to support our program.

I would like to personally thank Juanita Starr and Debi Bouchie, our Band Administrator for their efforts on this funding application.
