LANDS AND RESOURCES COORDINATOR

Greetings,

Most of you know me, but for those surfing the worldwideweb who don't...I'm Jamie Michano, Lands and Resources Coordinator for Pic River First Nation.

I started in this position on April 7, 2008. This is a whole new chapter in the history of Pic River First Nation. With the recent decisions of the Supreme Court of Canada on issues of Consulation and Accommodation of First Nations communities, Pic River took a proactive role in making sure that we're on top of all activity taking place within our Traditional Territory.

This being such a new and exciting position, I have the opportunity to accomplish some great things in my time here with Pic River. With an educational background in Political Science...and being involved in politics at the educational level as the President of the Aboriginal Students' Association at York University, the community level as an elected member of Pic River Band Council recently (until my offer of employment with PRFN), and also the international level as one of three Canadian student leaders at the North American Leadership Insititute held at the Universidad Panamericana in Mexico City...I am truly excited to be involved with my community in this capacity. This is exactly what I saw myself doing...when I grew up.

I have had the chance to hold a few community information sessions in my first few weeks on the job. I am very encouraged by the turn out at each of these sessions. My only hope, is that community members understand the importance of their attendance at these meetings/sessions/gatherings.

The future of our community and what happens in our Traditional Territory lies in your hands.

For those who have questions or concerns, of just want to sit and chat. I can be reached at the band office.

LANDS & RESOURCES ASSISTANT

Good day all,

My name is Juanita Starr and I am the Lands & Resources Assistant. I began my position in December of 2008 as part of an internship. Over the course of a year and a half, the Lands and Resources department has grown significantly in a positive direction, that I was asked to continue working once my contract was completed.

My background is in Public Relations as I graduated in 2007 from Cambrian College as Scholar with an Advance Diploma in Public Relations. In recent months, I have achieved Levels I, II & III in GIS Mapping through ESRI Canada and completed Statisical Training from StatsCan.

I undertake many intiatives within the department aside from the adminstrative aspect. I manage and assist the Mouth of the Pic committee, and because the time contraints and schedule demands of the LRC, I am permitted to attend meetings in his place on several occasions. Since Lands and Resources is not a federally funded department through INAC, it has become my responsibility to research source funding, grant/proposal writing, budgets, etc.

I am fortunate enough to be granted the ability broaden my experience levels within the First Nation as well. My other department initiatves include any communication and public relations for Pic River. This includes design elements, media releases, newsletters, advertising/marketing, website, etc. Currrently, I am working with the IT Manager to create a updated website and then maintaining thereafter. I also am working towards digitalizing our historical archives for future use such as pictures, audio, video, etc. I hope one day to incorprate this new media into the website and for use in the educational field.

As I continue my employment with Pic River, look forward to gaining more experience and increase my capacity as an employee while Lands and Resources continues to flourish.

Juanita Starr
