Garland Moses was first employed with the First Nation nineteen years ago and became a part of the Management Team shortly after. His area of responsibilities is to ensure that Pic River Infrastructure is developed to meet the needs of its membership. Since his employment, he has implemented the development of potable water moving from to ground source that is designed treated with slow sand with ozononation treatment. In addition, Garland has assisted in the development of a new Daycare centre located in the community which is now known as Children and Family Learning Centre. To support the overall need in overall wellness of the community and the surrounding area, Garland has been instrumental in the capital development of the Holistic Treatment Centre which is named the Biibaaban Healing Lodge. His latest support to the community infrastructure is the completion of a new office to support the Anishinabek Police Service. With the assistance of the Housing Committee support by our leadership and management team, the housing program has grown up to 160 residential units which includes a Senior Complex as well as a Six Complex which was recently completed in March 2010. With the completion of the Six Plex, the Housing Program has completed a major part of the Ojibways of the Pic River Ten Year completion which addresses the need to construct up to forty residential units. Today along with the Home Improvement Program, which has completed renovations to nineteen of existing residential structures, another eighteen units are currently in process and are slated for completion by the end of March 2011. To support the overall success of Pic River long term objective to transfer ownership directly to its membership, programs such as Certification of Possession, home maintenance, budgeting, adequate insurances and the examination of a Housing Authority is being considerate for future development. Of course, these achievements will not be possible without the support of its Housing Committee, Senior Management, Council and private lending institutions such as the Toronto Dominion, Bank of Montreal and the Royal Bank Programs. And most importantly, we appreciate the support and cooperation of the membership of Pic River who are setting the path for our future, the upcoming generation. |

Hello, my name is Theresa Thompson. I’m a member of Pic 50 Reserve, now known as the Ojibways of the Pic River First Nation and just recently returned home in 2007 after being away for more than 20 years. I’m married to Gilbert Thompson; we have 4 children and 5 grandchildren. I came home so my husband and 2 younger children can experience what it was like living on my reserve. To my surprise the two older ones followed. Some can say that I have come full circle in my life.
I graduated from Confederation College in 1986 in the Band Management Program. I went on to take some accounting courses at the college. I was employed by Native People of Thunder Bay Housing Corporation in 1988. This is where I gained valuable experience in non-profit housing.
We moved from Thunder Bay to Red Rock First Nation in 2002. My husband was employed with Norampac until the mill closed and he later found employment with the Lake Helen Band. Employment in the Nipigon area was low. I worked on contracts with my previous employer during our stay in Lake Helen.
In my job, I am responsible for the incoming housing applications, priority reports, lease agreements, rent/mortgage arrears, monthly reports, annual income reviews, audit, rent receivables, payment plans, home-visits, evictions, maintenance work orders, paperwork for new and old employees, WSIB forms, set up of new and maintaining tenant files, BCR’s, arranging and attending meetings, attend Housing Conferences and much more.
Working for Pic River is an honour and very challenging at times. I look forward to working for band for many more years. I think I’m finally home.
Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much. ~ Helen Keller ~ |
